ABOUT CLEAN ECONOMY FUND:
Clean Economy Fund is a public foundation with the mission to rally more philanthropy for bold projects that support giant leaps toward a prosperous, net-zero emissions economy. Canada’s climate organizations depend on philanthropic funding to carry out influential research, policy analysis and advocacy projects. The CEF’s job is to ensure good projects get the funding they need when they need it. We do this by working with the philanthropic community to secure more financial support for climate solutions at the same time as seeking out and incubating strategic, high-impact climate initiatives.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
Clean Economy Fund is seeking an experienced and action-oriented thought leader who will help grow and strengthen our philanthropic impact in Canada’s climate space. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring every dollar in philanthropic funding that originates or flows through Clean Economy Fund has maximum impact. That means constantly identifying the most urgent and high-impact projects in alignment with CEF’s Priorities and Principles, incubating special projects that address urgent gaps, engaging effectively with CEF’s funding collaborators to secure partnerships, advancing thought leadership, and successfully monitoring, measuring and communicating impact of projects being supported.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Grant management (30%)
- Identify grant-making priorities, guided by CEF’s High-Impact Priorities framework, CEF’s Principles, funding collaborators, expert advisors, stakeholder engagement and rigorous independent research
- Facilitate and lead conversations with CEF’s funding collaborators to gather insights and generate support for CEF grant priorities
- Conduct outreach with climate practitioners and other key stakeholders to be constantly aware of emerging priorities and projects in Canada’s climate space
- Regularly convene and procure insights from CEF’s expert advisors
- Prepare and maintain a roster of current project opportunities
- Make grant recommendations to the Executive Director
- Coordinate with the Executive Director and Manager of Operations to secure contributions from CEF funding collaborators for identified projects
- Draft grant agreements and track their implementation
- Project management (30%)
- Oversee special projects, such as CEF’s Housing & Climate Initiative, ensuring they have the governance, leadership and resources they need to succeed
- Recruit and coordinate independent contractors to ensure special projects are adequately supported
- Manage clear and transparent project budgets and reporting
- Identify new special project opportunities that fill urgent gaps in Canada’s net-zero agenda, guided by CEF’s High-Impact Priorities framework, CEF’s Principles, funding collaborators, expert advisors, stakeholder engagement and rigorous independent research
- Measuring and communicating impact (30%)
- Monitor grant recipients, manage reporting needs, and provide guidance and support to ensure projects achieve maximum potential
- Help develop and then implement CEF impact measurement system
- Produce annual impact report
- Communicate impact to CEF funding collaborators
- Storytell about supported projects and general CEF impact via website, mailings, media, webinars and funder collaborator updates
- Thought leadership (10%)
- Read reports, attend conferences, and consult experts in order to develop sector-leading insights on Canada’s transition to a prosperous, net-zero economy
- Share insights regularly with CEF’s funding collaborators, and the climate community at large, via articles, meetings and webinars, memos, podcasts, speaking opportunities, and other media
- Inform CEF’s strategic outlook through planning sessions
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE IS:
- An experienced researcher and/or project manager in Canada’s climate community
- Well established in climate research and climate policy circles
- Intimately familiar with modeling of Canada’s pathways to net zero
- Highly knowledgeable of climate work happening in the charity/non-profit, government, academic and private sectors
- Organized and detail oriented
- Highly professional
- A gifted writer and speaker in English (ability to communicate in both official languages considered an asset)
- A people person
- A team player who is self-driven and works well independently
- Prepared to travel for short assignments (up to 5 days per month)
- Based in or near Ottawa, Toronto or Montreal (combination of remote work and office)
EXPERIENCE
- Graduate degree in relevant field or equivalent training
- 10+ years of relevant work experience
REPORTING
This position reports to the Executive Director
ELIGIBILITY
Candidates must be based in Canada. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
SALARY
This position has a salary range of $105,000-$125,000, and includes paid vacation and a competitive benefits package.
